The Solution

“We didn't
cause it,
we can't
control it,
and we can't
cure it.”

In the solution we learn that even though our parents gave us our physical existence, we can now look to God, our Heavenly Father, as the initiator of our new life. We look to Him to lead us to a new level of experience, and to give us direction toward a life of wholeness and healing of the past. We learn that we do not have to remain prisoners of our past.

Recovery starts when we begin to learn about the disease. We learn that is is three-fold: we didn't cause it, we can't control it, and we can't cure it. By becoming educated about the disease we begin a process that eventually leads us to forgiveness for our parents and the willingness to release them to God. We learn to focus on ourselves in the here and now, and to detach from our obsession with the alcoholic/dysfunctional person. We learn to love ourselves and others, even though this may sometimes take the form of “tough love”.

We experience new freedom as we find there are people we can begin to trust. We learn to allow ourselves to feel our feelings, and then to express them. We learn that in Christ, we are accepted. With God's help and the twelve steps based on Scriptures, we can begin to recover from dysfunctional past, turn our lives in a new direction, and be freed from the shame that has bound us.
